Dive into a sacred ocean of raga with bamboo flute master Steve Gorn and renowned multi-instrumentalist Benjy Wertheimer. Although Steve Gorn and Benjy Wertheimer had not yet met, they'd been hearing about each other for nearly 20 years. Finally, in January of 2001, Krishna Das invited them both to Los Angeles to record on his CD, "Breath of the Heart." During breaks in the recording schedule, they instantly began to play together. Music without words... Esraj and flute weaving the melodic contours of a raga... Flute and tabla meeting in a spontaneous rhythmic dance. It was clearly the beginning of a deep and powerful musical relationship.

About The Ragas
The musical form at the heart of traditional Indian classical music, the raga or (or "rag," in modern Hindi/Urdu) has its roots in the Sanskrit "ranj," which means "to color." It is sometimes said, "that which colors the mind is the raga." A raga defies simple definition. More than a scale, mode, tune or melody, it is a combination of elements, such as the modal structure, including the ascending and descending movement, the emphasis or avoidance of certain notes, the characteristic movements and motifs (the heart of the raga), the time of day or season, and the moods of the raga.

Steve Gorn
Steve Gorn has performed Indian Classical Music and new American Music on the bansuri bamboo flute in concerts and festivals throughout the world. His gurus are the late bansuri master Sri Gour Goswami, of Kolkata, and Pt. Raghunath Seth of Mumbai, who he often accompanies in concert. He has also studied with the late Ustad Z.M. Dagar. His numerous recordings and international performances establish him as a world-class musician. www.stevegorn.com

Benjy Wertheimer is an award-winning songwriter, vocalist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist, who has toured and recorded with numerous great artists. He has studied Indian classical music for over 25 years with some of the greatest masters of that tradition, including Alla Rakha, Zakir Hussain, Ali Akbar Khan and Z.M. Dagar. He is a founding member of the internationally acclaimed Ancient Future world fusion music ensemble. www.shantalamusic.com

This very special event is $18 in advance, $25 day of. The studio has back-jack chairs, blankets, bolsters, and some comfortable folding chairs. Doors open at 7:30pm.

Bibi McGill is so much more than the woman behind the blazing guitar riffs that have elevated Beyoncé's live performances to the next level. As the touring guitarist and Musical Director of Beyoncé's 10-piece, all-female band, Bibi showcases her ability to rock her own original compositions within the framework of Beyoncé hits, all while overseeing the rest of the musicians and production elements onstage.

After graduating from The University of Colorado, with a Bachelors Degree in Music Scoring and Arranging, Bibi moved to California to cut her teeth in the clubs of Los Angeles. Bibi developed her impressive stage persona and indispensable expertise on the massive stages of Latin American with the likes of Paulina Rubio, often dubbed
Mexico's Madonna, and Chilean rockers La Ley before joining Beyoncé's team. Making her home in Portland, Oregon, Bibi's healthy lifestyle is what keeps the afroed and intricately tattooed guitarist balanced.

Focusing her entrepreneurial energy on her own line of handmade, organic Bibi Kale Chips, she is also an accomplished yogi who strives to make yoga available to everyone. Having a passion for yoga and Kirtan since her first introduction in 1998, Bibi has also performed with Kirtan artists Dave Stringer, Karnamrita Dasi, Shantala, CC White, Simrit Kaur, The Hanumen and Gurunam Singh. Look for Bibi's "Peace, Jungle, LOVE" tour of Brazil in August 2015 in which she will will share her yoga workshops, health & wellness lectures, Kirtan, animal activism and youth out reach with the people of Brazil.

Steve Gorns bansuri is featured on the 2011 Grammy winning recording, Miho Journey to the Mountain, with Dhruba Ghosh and the Paul Winter Consort, as well as the Academy Award winning Documentary film, Born into Brothels. He has performed Indian Classical Music and new American Music on the bansuri bamboo flute in concerts and festivals throughout the world. He has often performed in India and his concert with Ravi Shankars disciple, Barun Kumar Pal was televised throughout throughout the country. In 2013, he was awarded the Pandit Jasraj Rotary Club of Hyderabad Award for Cross Cultural Achievement.

Sean Frenette is a guitaris/bard/multi-instrumentalist/composer/artist. His multi-faceted creative pursuits have led to many adventures including the opportunity to share music in many wonderful places with many beautiful people: three times at Carnegie Hall; in 2006 with a host of musical pioneers led by Edgar Meyer and Mike Marshall; in 2009 with master Indian musician Zakir Hussain and a coterie of young virtuosos; and in May of 2010 with composer/conductor John Adams and Ensemble ACJW (Academy, Carnegie, Juilliard, and Weill institute). Since moving to Portland, Oregon, Sean plays with Matt Butler's Everyone Orchestra, kirtan artists Benjy and Heather Werthheimer of Shantala, Dave Stringer, singer Lindsey Stormo, and as a soloist. He also sings with the 8 part Estonian choir Trillium Voices.

This tour is a synthesis of sacred chanting in the languages of Sanskrit and Hebrew and uplifting songs in the style of world folk music. The music is a blend of East and West, meditative and ecstatic, ancient and contemporary. Everyone is welcome, and there will be a lot of audience participation and invitation for all to sing.

The roots of religion all have their origins in the same soil. We believe in building bridges across the lines of different faiths, trusting in the ground that anchors those bridges. When we move deeply enough into sacred space, we find common truths and shared experiences. We want to sing to God in many different languages. We believe in honoring the sacredness of spirit and nature. One sun is shining down upon us all.

The Path of Kirtan explores the ancient practices of kirtan and sacred sound. In this workshop we’ll immerse ourselves in this luminous ocean through voice, mantra, devotion, movement, yoga and meditation to connect more deeply with the divine Presence. In many Eastern cultures, the practice of music is approached as a spiritual practice, as the yoga of sound, and that is how it will be presented in this workshop. From this foundation, the chanting of sacred names and mantras will flow with new depth and new freedom. This workshop is offered with the intention to cultivate more beauty, love and peace inside ourselves and in our world.

Heather and Benjy Wertheimer lead kirtan (sacred chanting) worldwide as the duo Shantala, with soul-stirring vocals, sacred lyrics and exquisite instrumentation. Together they create music with beauty, passion and reverence. Shantala has performed and recorded internationally with such sacred music luminaries as Krishna Das, Deva Premal and Miten, and Jai Uttal. Elizabeth Rainey, certified yoga teacher, will offer yoga and meditation during this retreat.

This trip is an offering from our hearts to yours. We will gather in the sacred and beautiful atmosphere of the Himalayas, and inhale the deep resonating hum that permeates the majestic mountainous region known as the Kumaon Hills. We will bathe in the grace of Neem Karoli Baba, and other great Indian Saints who have walked these sacred mountains, leaving their blessings to inspire spiritual aspirants for millennia. Staying at the pristine Madhuban retreat center, nestled in the exalted Himalayan foothills, we will meditate, chant, and pray together, while embarking on day trips to the many sacred sites in the region, including Neem Karoli Baba’s magical Kainchi Ashram!
